The future looks bright for Goole RUFC as our thriving Mini and Junior section look forward to yet another season in which we hope to run teams across all age groups from 7s through to 17s and there is a positive mood in the whole club. Following another revamp of the National League system, the senior club has been ‘promoted’ to Yorkshire 2 and finds itself in the company of teams like North Ribblesdale, Barnsley, Pocklington, Huddersfield YMCA and West Park Leeds. The First XV produced a strong finish at the end of last season and this was in no small part down to the influence of Richard Shand as several of his talented youngsters have now broken through into the 2 senior teams. Add to this an U17s team
who are training alongside the senior players in pre season and who should provide the next crop of 1st and 2nd team players over the next couple of years and you begin to see a pattern.
Over 30 years ago I was part of the first Mini Rugby intake at this club when we were at Murham Avenue, run then by the likes of current club chairman Dave Webster. This developed a number of players who went on to play senior rugby for the club during the 80s and 90s and this was further strengthened by the commitment from Goole Grammer School who had a strong rugby playing history. Most of the team I grew up with played for the school 1st XV on a Saturday morning, one of the Goole RUFC sides on a Saturday afternoon, then a Goole club colts team under Tony Ruhmann on a Sunday morning. These days are long gone though with the changes in the age requirements to play senior rugby and the amount of competitive rugby played in schools locally having diminished. The Mini and Junior section though goes from strength to strength and an already strong coaching set up now has the benefit of a number of ex 1st XV players involved across the age groups. It also has a new Chairman as Dave Chappell has joined the ranks this season adding to his coaching role with the U11s. Dave, who has played for the club for over 35 years, many of those as a 1st XV regular is keen to add his experience to the club.
The remit is simple, the kids and coaches enjoy themselves in a competitive environment but the aim is for players from as young as 5 years old to develop through the age groups being comfortable with the ball in hand and there should be a natural progression through the club to go on and play at senior level. This has been lacking in recent years but we are starting to see some youngsters coming through, which can only bode well for the future. In addition to a strong playing base, the club has an enthusiastic committee who work hard behind the scenes plus an eventful social calendar. Rugby has a strong social side and does not end when the game finishes. We have a code of conduct that involves players, coaches, referees and spectators and while winning is of course important for all the teams, there is a healthy emphasis on developing respect, friendship, teamwork and a life long interest in the game.
The whole ethos of the set up is fully endorsed by the main club and stalwart Dave Rose is closely monitoring the green shoots coming through. We are working hard with the Mini and Junior section to develop the next generation of senior players within Goole RUFC and the work that has been done with
some of the older age groups over the last few seasons is now starting to pay dividends. The club is always looking for new players, particularly in the younger age groups where players can train from age 5 upwards. Further information can be found on the club web site http://www.goolerfc.co.uk.
