GOOLE RUFC

Goole Medley 25th Anniversary:

“We Were Strollin’ Along On Moonlight Bay” is a line that has been heard in many places around the world and in many rugby clubs are bars around the country over the years. What many people do not know is the origin of the medley.

It goes back to a Club Tour to the Isle of Man at Easter 1983 where we were told  that no rugby teams and no naughty rugby songs were allowed in the local bars. So not to be outdone I checked out my Mum’s record and tape collection to compile the medley so we could have a good sing-song anywhere without upsetting anyone. With choir practices after training and the threat of being hung by their testicles if anyone did not learn the medley, it all went very well with one exception. Bill Wilcox came to practice drunk and disruptive one night and had to be brought into line with a pint poured over his head. Happy times. Well the practice worked and long it may the medley continue to be sung.

We will be arranging a good sing-song in April so be aware and come and join us

We were strollin’ along, on Moonlight Bay,

You could hear the voices singing, they seem to say,

You have stolen my heart, now don't go away,

As we sang loves old sweet song, on Moonlight Bay, On Moonlight Bay......

By the light……………of the silvery moon,

I love to spoon, to my honey I'll croon loves tunes,

Honey moon………….. keep a shining in June,

Those silvery beams, will bring loves dreams,

We'll be cuddling soon……………….. by the light of the moon,

The moon, the moon, the moon, the moon, the moon, the………...

Shine on, shine on harvest moon, up in the sky,

I ain’t had no loving since, January, February, June and July,

No time, ain't no time to sit, alone and spoon,

So shine on, shine on harvest moon, for me and my gal……..

The bells are ringing, for me and my gal,

The birds are singing, for me and my gal,

Everybody’s been knowing, to a wedding their going,

And for weeks they've been sewing, every Susie and Sal,

They're congregating, for me and my gal,

The Parsons waiting, for me and my gal,

And someday soon, we're gonna build a little home for two,

Or three or four or more,

In love land, for me and my gal….

Shooby do, shooby do, shooby do………..

Though we ain't got a barrel of money,

Maybe we're ragged and, funny,

But we'll travel along, singing a song, side by side,

Through all kinds of weather, what if the sky should fall,

Just as long as we're together, it doesn't really matter at all,

When they've all had their troubles and parted,

We'll be the same as we started,

Just travelling along, singing a song, side by side……………… Cos

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina………In the, morning,

Nothing could be sweeter than my sweetie when I meet her………… in the, morning,

When the morning glory, hangs around your door,

Whispering pretty stories, I want to hear once more.

Strolling with my girlie where the dew is pearly early………In the morning,

Butterflies all flutter up and kiss each little buttercup at………. dawning,

If I had Aladdin’s lamp for only a day,

I'd make a wish and here's what I'd say,

Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina,

In the, morning…………….

Cause when the Red Red Robin,

Comes bob, bob, bobbin along, along,

There'll be no more sobbin’ when he starts throbbin’ his own, sweet song,

Wake up; wake up you sleepy head,

Get up; get up get out of bed,

Cheer up; cheer up the sun is red,

Live, love, laugh and be happy,

What if I'd been blue, now I'm walking through fields of flowers?

Rain may glisten but still I'll listen for hours and hours,

I'm just a kid again doing what I did again, singing this song,

When the Red, Red Robin comes bob, bob bobbing along…………….

Pardon me boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo,

Track 29. Boy, you can give me a shine,

I can afford to board the Chattanooga Choo Choo,

I've got my fare, and Just a trifle to spare,

You leave the Pennsylvania station about a quarter to four,

Read a magazine and then you’re in Baltimore,

Dinner in the dinner, nothing could be finer.

Than to have your ham and eggs in Carolina.

When you hear the whistle blowing, eight to the bar,

Then you know that Tennessee is not very far,

Shovel all the coal in gotta’ keep it rolling,

Woo, woo, Chattanooga there you are,

There's gonna be a certain party at the station,

Satin and lace, I used to call funny face,

She's gonna cry, until I tell her that I'll never roam,

So Chattanooga Choo Choo, won't you choo choo me home, Chattanooga. Chattanooga. All aboard,

Chattanooga Choo Choo, won't you choo choo me home? …………….

Ba Ba Ba etc,

Oh, you railway station, Oh, you Pullman train……..  waa waa waa,

Here's my reservation, for my destination,

Far………………. ( Two, three),

Beyond the westward plain………… To…… See….. My,

Home, in Pasadena, where the grass is greener,

Where honey bees, hum melodies, and orange trees scent the breeze,

I want to be, a Home Sweet Homer, there I'll settle down.

Beneath those palms in someone’s arms,

In Pasadena, rat tat tat a tat tat tat.

Beneath those palms etc ……………..

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) Lyrics

When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you

If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you

When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man whose lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

Top                                                RUNNING BEAR

ON THE BANKS  -   OF THE RIVER;

STOOD RUNNING BEAR   -   YOUNG INDIAN BRAVE;

ON THE OTHER  -   SIDE OF THE RIVER;

STOOD A LOVELY  -   INDIAN MAID;

LITTLE WHITE DOVE  -   WAS’ER HER NAME;

SUCH A LOVELY  -   SIGHT TO SEE;

BUT THEIR TRIBES   -   FOUGHT WITH EACH OTHER;

SO THEIR LOVE   -   COULD NEVER BE.

CHORUS

RUNNING BEAR, LOVES LITTLE WHITE DOVE,

WITH A LOVE, AS BIG AS THE SKY,

RUNNING BEAR, LOVES LITTLE WHITE DOVE

WITH A LOVE, THAT WOULDN’T DIE.

CHORUS

HE COULDN’T SWIM  -   THE RAGIN’ RIVER;

CAUSE THE RIVER  -   WAS TOO WIDE.

HE COULDN’T REACH  -   LITTLE WHITE DOVE;

WAITING ON  -   THE OTHER SIDE.

IN THE MOONLIGHT  -   HE COULD SEE HER;

BLOWING KISSES  -   ACROSS THE WAVES.

HER LITTLE HEART  -   WAS BEATIN FASTER;

WAITING THERE  -   FOR HER BRAVE.

CHORUS

RUNNING BEAR  -   DIVED IN THE WATER;

LITTLE WHITE DOVE  -   DID THE SAME.

AND THEY SWAM  -   OUT TO EACH OTHER;

THROUGH THE SWIRLING  -   STREAM THEY CAME.

AS THEIR HANDS MET  -   AND THEIR LIPS MET;

THE RAGING RIVER  -   PULLED THEM DOWN.

NOW THEY’LL ALWAYS  -   BE TOGETHER;

IN THE HAPPY HUNTING GROUND.

CHORUS

Top                                             She Wears Red Feather

I worked in a London bank, respectable position

From nine to three they served you tea which ruined your disposition

Each night in the music hall, travelogues I’d sea

And once a pearl of a native girl was smiling right at me

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She lives on just coconuts and fish from the sea

With a rose in her hair, a gleam in her eye, and love in her heart for me.

Goodbye to the London bank, I started me a sailing

The fourteenth day from Mandalay, I spied her from the railing

She knew I was on the way, waiting and was true

She said “you son of an Englishman, I’ve dreamed all night of you”

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She lives on just coconuts and fish from the sea

With a rose in her hair, a gleam in her eye, and love in her heart for me.

I went to her Ma and Pa, and said I loved her only

And they both said we could be wed, Oh what a ceremony

An elephant brought her in, and placed her by my side

While six baboons got out bassoons and played “Here Comes The Bride”

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She lives on just coconuts and fish from the sea

With a rose in her hair, a tear in her eye, and love in her heart for me.

I’m back here in London town, and though it may sound silly

She’s here with me and you should see us walk down Piccadilly

The boys of the London bank all laugh and hold their breath

She sits with me and sips her tea which tickles them to death

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She wears red feathers and a Goolie Goolie shirt

She lives on just coconuts and fish from the sea

With a rose in her hair, a tear in her eye, and love in her heart for me.

Top                                   (Is This The Way To) AMARILLO

When the day is dawning, on a Texas Sunday morning;

How I long to be there, with Marie who’s waiting for me there;

Every lonely city, where I hang my hat;

Ain’t as half as pretty, as where my baby’s at ……………….

Is this the way to Amarillo, every night I’ve been huggin’ my pillow;

Dreaming dreams of Amarillo, and sweet Marie who waits for me;

Show me the way to Amerillo, I’ve been weeping like a willow;

Crying over Amarillo, and sweet Marie who waits for me.

Shallalah la la la etc – And Marie who waits for me.

There’s a church bell ringing, with a song of joy that it’s singing;

For the sweet Marie, and the guy who’s coming to see her;

Just beyond the highway, there’s an open plain;

And it keeps me going, through the wind and rain…………..

Is this the way to Amarillo, every night I’ve been huggin’ my pillow;

Dreaming dreams of Amarillo, and sweet Marie who waits for me;

Show me the way to Amerillo, I’ve been weeping like a willow;

Crying over Amarillo, and sweet Marie who waits for me.

Shallalah la la la etc – And Marie who waits for me.

Shallalah la la la etc – And Marie who waits for me…………………
